The EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ (AKA the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15) is updated each year ranking pesticide contamination on popular fruits and vegetables. The guide is based on thousands of samples tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration.
The top 15 foods with the least pesticides are called the Clean 15, while the 12 foods with the most pesticides are called the Dirty Dozen.
Here’s why buying organic avocados is not as important to stress about! Avocado’s protective skin barrier protects the fruit inside from harmful chemicals and toxins.
Save yourself a few bucks, focus buying organic produce on the Dirty Dozen list more than produce listed on the Clean 15.
Based on this list, avocados and sweet corn were the cleanest. Less than 1 percent of samples showed any detectable pesticides. Additionally, most of the Clean Fifteen fruit and vegetable samples had no pesticide residues. Therefore, organic does not always mean healthier or better for you! However, we always recommend washing all fruits and veggies skins, including avocados, before cutting/eating!
Curious to see if avocados stay at the top of the list for 2020! Noticed in previous years, it remains pretty high up on the list of clean produce.
